“弑君”第三剑 iRiver T30详细评测
也许大家都会说:“不是一个档次的东西,不存在竞争关系”。但在笔者看来,“不存在竞争关系”的潜台词是“想争都没有机会”,让苹果在千元市场上欲哭无泪,这才是iRiver这个“弑君者”的真正杀招,这样说大家应该明白T20和T30的作用了吧
大家知道皇帝是怎样自我称呼的吗?记住,他们自称为“剐人”。其实这个词是很贴切的,人类的皇帝可以去“剐”别人,产业的皇帝可以被别人“剐”......
目前MP3市场的皇帝是谁?毫无疑问非苹果公司莫数!“苹果”就是一种要用刀削掉皮之后才能吃的东西,削皮的动 作和“剐”的过程非常相似,从这点来看来该公司能成为产业“皇帝”也算名正言顺。接下来笔者就要引如我们的主题了——谁去“剐”了苹果皇帝?用什么工具来 “剐”?目前看来,有三个“刽子手”冲在第一线;他们是——创新,艾利和,与三星。俗话说“工欲善其事,必先利其器”,今天我们就来仔细的看一下艾利和手中的“剐人”三利器之一——T30。
前面的话好似开玩笑一般,各位不必当真。今天我们要做的是iRiver刚投入中国市场的新MP3播放器T30的评测。该产品从设计上看是不针对任何市场现有产品的,其设计理念是和已经发布的iRiver T10,iRiver T20组成一个高低搭配产品线,为高端的T10保驾护航,完善该公司的产品体系。虽说单个产品并没有明确的指向,但是其整个产品策略的目标很明确,抓住苹果公司新品开发周期长,产品线配置不合理的缺点,尽可能多的抢占中端市场。
如果说T10是整个iRiver市场策略的开路先锋,那么T30就是负责扫尾的殿后部队。这样的定位决定了T30必须要遵循的设计要素。
第一:相对低廉的成本。“草根”阶层能提供的资金向来是有限的,而T30的任务是将尽可能多的用户领入iRiver的“家门”,因此该产品就必 然要和身价高昂T10拉开差距,在保证质量的情况下,尽可能的压底成本。虽然目前该产品的价格依然高悬于千元左右,但是其降价的余地也绝对不容小看。
第二:较短的生命周期和改进的可能性。作为一款以保驾护航为己任的产品,其生命周期可谓“身不由己”纵使能获得良好的销量,也不能摆脱配角的地位,一旦其高层策略发生转变T30必然会在市场上消失,然后改头换面,挂个新的名字,另拥新主。
第三:极高的品质要求。消费层次越低的人,对产品的品质要求就越高。无他,就一个“钱”字而已,任何一个柜台前对于T30喋喋不休的盘问肯定要 多出T10,毕竟低消费层次的客户希望把每一个铜板都花到实处。而购买T10的人,在资金充裕的情况下反而不是那么的斤斤计较。
总的来说T30扮演的是一个,既要献血,又要踢世界杯的角色,那么其实际表现究竟怎样呢?我们进入实际评测阶段。
在时尚音频领域,外观实际上已经超越了音质成为消费者购买产品的第一标准。T30的外观总体上呈钝角三角形。虽然在纯美观角度上讲T30并不出挑, 但是笔者觉得这样的设计传承了iRiver经典的三角外观。本来这个责任并不应该落在T30的头上,但无奈的是T10的偏锋设计使其不能起到传承经典的作 用,因此只能由T30代劳了。
笔者收到的样机机身采用银灰色和黑色作为色彩基调,总体来说给人的感觉是沉稳而老练,蓝色的背光灯的LCD显示面板谈不上漂亮,而且在阳光的直射下基本会失去作用。不过其总体上保证了设计风格的稳定。
如果要看一样产品的做工,那最有必要详细观察的是原材料的结合部分,幽优良的产品在切边和结合部分上应该圆润光滑,结合紧密;绝对不能露出毛 刺。随身听产品虽然不是贴身携带的首饰,但是其和我们皮肤“亲密接触”的概率依然不小,做工粗糙的产品有时会造成皮肤的不适甚至划破。当然这样的情况是绝 对不会出现在iRiver的产品上,否则他们的生意也不用做了。
T30采用4枚螺丝钉来卯和两片产品外壳,说实话这给了笔者很大的拆机冲动。不过在KEN的预防针下,笔者还是没有跨出这一步。在笔者克制自己的同时,也奉劝有手痒习惯的读者一句:MP3是用来听的,而不是拆着玩的。
由于机身采用了三角型设计,这样按键就只能被安排在机身的两侧。暴露在外的按钮非常容易引起误操作,因此锁定功能键对于T30而言是相当重要 的,实际上该键被安放的位置确实相当显眼。在感觉上T30的按键都非常的硬派,不用力是不能将其按到底的,这可能也是综合考虑了外观设计的情况而实施的补 救措施吧,因为MP3的按钮使用频率并不高,硬一些也确实不容易引起疲劳。
由于笔者拿到的工程样机,所以该机的固件显得非常原始。不过从仅有的一些功能中我们也能看出T30的独到之处。该机的所有功能调整都落在机身一侧的 “M”键上了,长按键后我们能看到5个功能菜单。其中音乐和浏览功能可以撇开不谈,值得我们关注的是其功能设定键。在功能详细列表中我们能看到该机的 Firmware的版本号为1.02应该说后期改进的余地非常大。在这个版本Firmware之下声音EQ的设定还是非常丰富的,除了16种予设的音乐风 格之外,我们还能进行详细的声音调整,不同的音域都在调整的范围之内。虽然真正喜欢去调整EQ功能的消费者并不多(能调好的更少),不过iRiver对于 产品的这种认真态度是值得其他产品所学习的。
MP3的最终效果如何很大程度上取决于耳机。在iRiver以往的产品中曾经采用过森海塞尔的MX400,这给用户对于iRiver的产品带来 了很多的期待。可惜,这次送测的T30中实际采用的耳机是一种仿制MX400的产品,让笔者有所失望了,不过产品销售时采用怎样的耳机还是个未知数。
音质是一个不太好描述对象,毕竟每个人的耳朵和音乐习惯都不一样,所以在本次评测中本人起用了6个具有代表性的曲目来实验解码芯片和耳机的配合,曲目分别是:

【浅尝辄止——数字音频基础讲解】图文讲解
大家知道,无论现在的多媒体电脑功能如何强大,其内部也只能处理数字信息。而我们听到的声音都是模拟信号,怎样才能让电脑也能处理这些声音数据呢?还有,究竟模拟音频与数字音频有什么不同呢?数字音频究竟有些什么优点呢?这些都是我们下面所要介绍的。
把模拟音频转成数字音频,在电脑音乐里就称作采样,其过程所用到的主要硬件设备便是模拟/数字转换器(Analog to Digital Converter,即ADC)。采样的过程实际上是将通常的模拟音频信号的电信号转换成许多称作“比特(Bit)”的二进制码0和1,这些0和1便构成 了数字音频文件。如下图,图中的正弦曲线代表原始音频曲线;填了颜色的方格代表采样后得到的结果,二者越吻合说明采样结果越好。
上图中的横坐标便是采样频率;纵坐标便是采样分辨率。图中的格子从左到右,逐渐加密,先是加大横坐标的密度,然后加大纵坐标的密度。显然,当横坐标 的单位越小即两个采样时刻的间隔越小,则越有利于保持原始声音的真实情况,换句话说,采样的频率越大则音质越有保证;同理,当纵坐标的单位越小则越有利于 音质的提高,即采样的位数越大越好。
有一点请大家注意,8位(8Bit)不是说把纵坐标分成8份,而是分成2^8=256份;同理16位是把纵坐标分成2^16=65536份;而24 位则分成2^24=16777216份。现在我们来进行一个计算,看看一个数字音频文件的数据量到底有多大。假设我们是用44.1kHz、16bit来进 行立体声(即两个声道)采

针尖对麦穗 浅谈MP3与MD音质优劣
自从MP3随身听诞生以来,在各个方面和MD比较就没有停止过,无论是操作性,方便性,声音表现,外观设计,还是对两种音乐格式本身的比较,都 是大家一直在热烈讨论(甚至是争吵)的。而正是这些存在争议的东西,由于很多是比较主观的原因,所以其实并没有什么绝对的定论。
常常有些用户,在选择随身听的时候,问笔者,是MP3音质好?还是MD音质好?面对这样的提问,笔者总是哑口无言。因为除了以上的原因,还有很 多其他的因素,如果想给他们解释清楚,实在是要花费很多口舌。而如果每次有人问都把这一大套说出去,不仅会把自己累死,对于询问的用户也不见得是件好事, 因为一般的消费者,都会自然的潜意识的喜欢把很多概念绝对化。比如,他问你这个问题,就想得到一个绝对的答案,就是MP3好,或者MD好,哪怕他得到的信 息不是绝对的,他也会把这些信息进行筛选和过滤,最后得出一个绝对的定论。这不是因为谁的无知或是别的原因,可以说是绝大多数人的定势思维在作祟,那就 是,凡事都或者好或者坏。个人认为,真正冷静成熟的心态应该是,在得到这些信息之后,经过筛选和判断,得出哪个更加适合我的结论,而不是哪个比哪个好。
即使是较为低端的MD产品,做工上也能与大部分高端MP3相媲美。
又有多少MP3的做工能达到高端水平?正是市面上占多数的中低端MP3把这一平均数拉低了。
有鉴于此,笔者真心希望大家能够抛开陈旧的定势,也抛开先前那些无知的成见,也真心希望在这里能清楚的把这些概念阐述给大家。希望大家能有个真正客观、公正的态度来对待这些问题。
在说到谁的音质好之前,首先需要声明、也是必须先为大家说明下音质本身到底是个什么概念。音质,可以说是声音的品质,用音响大师刘汉盛的话来 说,音质好不好就是声音让人听起来是不是觉得舒服。而对于到底什么样的声音是好声音呢?在HIFI界也同样的存在争论,有人认为没有污染的纯净的是好声 音,而有的人觉得有个性的,也就是有独特音染的才是好声音。笔者会比较倾向前者,真正展现声音本貌的才是最好的声音。而也是因为这样的取向,我们可以说声 音的好坏是有客观标准的,那就是他否能正确的,本质的还原出声音的本来面貌。

当然,在随身听的世界里,尤其是对很多普通的用户,谈论这些,显然是吹毛求疵的。因为大家购买随身听仅仅是为了闲暇之时欣赏下音乐,放松、休息下而已!所 以笔者说,对于大家的所谓音质的提问,或是说在随身听的世界里,对于很多人来说,这里所说的音质,应该理解作播放器本身的播放质量,和声音类型是否适合用 户,这两个方面。播放器本身的播放质量,可以说他是声音的“质量”,比如,有没有比较明显的背景噪音,声音是否清晰,会不会有跳音,左右声道的表现是否相 同等等这类问题。而是否适合用户,则是看用户的听音喜好,喜欢听摇滚的用户自然会说一款低音过量的MP3音质好,而一个喜欢听古典的用户则不会这么说。还 不能排除音效的作用,当然,真正的玩家是不会开音效来评价哪款器材的声音的,而绝大多数一般用户则会以此来判断,所以,也不难理解,有些器材的音质被很多 评测员说的一钱不值,而却被很多用户因为它提供了相当多的音效选择而捧为上品。
以上这些,可以说就是笔者面对“音质好不好”这个问题的时候哑口无言的原因了,因为笔者完全不知道对方对声音的定义到底是什么,也许他是想问低音好不好,或者是想问够不够清晰。

好,先解决了这个标准的问题,我们才能开始真正的讨论。笔者并不想(也不能)作出一个绝对的判断,说哪个更好,而只是想站在一个稍稍HIFI一点的角度来谈谈,针对大部分用户可以达到的条件,来比较MD和MP3哪个更能出好声音。
首先,自然是从音源说起,而笔者认为,如果公平的把两种随身听放在比较相同的条件下相比较,音源也是造成差距的最主要原因。
MP3和ARTAC都是有损压缩格式,而MP3可以支持高于ARTAC的码率,越来越多支持VBR的MP3播放器,可以支持上限为320k的文件,可以说 理论上,MP3已经在音源的质量方面赶上,甚至超过了MD。而且,对于音乐,不能单单以码率的高低来衡量声音的好坏,还要参考事实听感上的音乐感,在这点 上,MP3更有优势。
再看目前客观的情况,又有多少MD碟的录音水准可以完全发挥ARTAC格式的潜力呢?正版MD碟市场上几乎没有,所谓的“原版”碟虽然可以简 单,但是也很难找到自己喜欢的碟片。而那些由盗版商自己录制的碟片则是实在不敢恭维。再看用户自己录制的碟片,如果想使用最简单高效的光纤,手头上必须有 光纤输出设备、光纤线这些东西,还不包括制作过程中耗费的大量时间。很多用户对于这“复杂”的操作望而却步,加上NetMD的出现,更多的人走向了 USB,放弃了光纤。有的用户可能会使用模拟录音,由于一般都是比较“垃圾”的线材,使得背景噪声相当的明显,这样的声音实在不堪一击。
但是有的用户在给NetMD录音的时候,为了省事,甚至拿MP3文件来录制,这种以压缩格式再压缩的声音怎么能出好声?!而如果都能以CD为这 两种录音方式作音源,一般都可以发挥ARTAC的大部分潜力,不过,能这样做的用户到底有多少?相信大部分用户都不会因为要录制少数几首歌甚至只是一首而 先买一张CD碟吧?在此顺便说说关于版权的问题,MD玩家以MP3为不耻,其中一大理由是MP3的音源来源于网络,绝大多数并没有获得版权,MP3市场的 膨胀是构建在这样一个不够光明正大的基础之上的。其实MD玩家们可以看看自己储存MD碟片的箱子,里边有几张是真正的原装正版的?即使是自己灌录的,又有 几成使用的是正版的CD碟呢?以当前中国盗版市场的兴旺来看,答案也就出来了。

撇开版权问题不谈,现在在很多网站、FTP站点,或是使用P2P软件,都可以下载到高码率的MP3文件,可以说,只要你有电脑(买MP3的人很少没有电脑),能够上网,你就有了个近乎无限的音乐库。
通过比较,不难发现,MP3的优势是很明显的,当然,他对电脑的“依赖”一直为很多人所诟病,但是又有谁能在这个数字的时代完全逃脱电脑的控制呢?!借助电脑的强大功能,才是真正的顺应时代。
再看还原,这要涉及到机本身的电路设计、耳机配置等等因素。由于只有少数几家大公司在生产MD,所以,无论电路设计还是产品做工,平均有很高的 水准。而MP3则是良莠不齐,几百块的和二千多块产品之间可谓天差地别。只有把MD和比较高级的MP3相比才是客观公正的,可以说,在这个还原阶段,这些 高级产品的表现几乎没什么差距。所以,使用什么样的耳机,又成了一个关键。但是无论MD还是MP3,随机的耳机都只是保证了基本的听的功能,对于有更高要 求的用户,更换是必须的。所以,在这方面,也只能说再次打平。

深度剖析iRiver渠道风波
2005年7月12日晚上消息,三奇承信和iRiver的合作终止,大陆市场将由iRiver公司自己负责销 售。声明中阐述的原因为:“iRiver韩国总部制定了细分市场的销售政策和惊人的销售业绩目标。在这些问题上,出于各自立场的不同,我们与iRiver 出现较大的意见分歧。经过反复协商,终于没能达成一致意见,导致合作终止。”

三奇承信与iRiver的合作终止,意味着iRiver原有的三奇承信的MP3市场销售渠道将会发生重大的变化。也正当大家为这一事件所深深震撼后不久,iRiver MP3突然其来的发生了重大的变化。
iRiver iFP-780
iFP-780是iRiver首款采用了飞利浦顶级芯片PNX0101的产品,外形上延续了太空船的经典设计风格,iFP780的性能非常全面,支持 mp3、wma、ogg等格式播放,多种EQ以及与飞利浦共同开发的Xtreme EQ、3D音效,可玩性甚强;录音包括MIC内录、FM内录、CD直录,具有AGC自动增益等辅助性功能,并且可以外接MIC使用,应用层面更加广泛;而 FM调频则支持全球波段调节。
8月4日,上述这款iRiver继iFP-380系列后的经典产品iFP-780,价格居然玩起“突然死亡”,在广州原价是800多元,一下疯狂暴跌至 599元,跌幅高达200多元,并且iRiver iFP-780全国各地价格都发生了不同程度的波动,广州 599,北京 599,上海 660,深圳 799,广西 799,山东 600,江苏 749……除此以外,iRiver其他型号价格包括N10、iFP-880、H5等产品也受到不同程度的影响。
从iFP-780的价格大幅度不规律动荡中,显然这是iRiver渠道发生变动后,伴随发生的一些后遗症。根据了解,事实的最终真相是因为三奇承信之前代 理iRiver时积累了大量库存,而此次价格动荡也正因为三奇承信与iRiver关系最终破裂而必须大量甩货所导致。
iRiver新品T10(中国未上市)
表面上iRiver与三奇承信是友好、和平分手,而实际上,根据一名曾任三奇承信华南区销售负责人表示(与iRiver关系破裂后辞职),三奇在无法与韩 国iRiver官方交代iFP-780+和iFP-880+条件下分手,心里带着一定的情绪,并且此次的甩货也是带有心机进行,准备把抛货价压到最低的价 格,把iRiver在中国的市场做烂,让后期自己重新接管中国销售的iRiver制造问题。
从这位负责人的话里,我们确实可以给予百分百的信任,根据业界人士分析。这是由于iRiver目前虽然一口气在韩国发布了T10、U10、T30等多款新 品,但是实际上这些新品最迟都必须要在9月,或者10月才能在中国市场正式上市,而且iRiver经过早前痛失iFP-380以后,相信再也不会轻易放弃 现有的iRiver经典机型iFP-780。
三奇此次针对着iRiver的要害,拼命地将iFP-780低价甩向市场,让iFP-780的价格做烂,把渠道扰乱,后阶段iRiver自己在重新建立渠 道和管理产品销售的时候,就会出现非常严重的问题。iFP-780今日能卖到599元,那消费者心里就会想,下阶段会否继续下降呢?因为综观目前MP3市 场,只有一个价格规律——只降不升。消费者看到的只有铺天盖地的降价信息报道,而从来没有看到哪款MP3会价格暴涨,所以在一定程度上,三奇承信这次的甩 货,确确实实、实实在在地给iRiver制造了一大麻烦。
那么后阶段iRiver会如何去处理这个目前面临的问题呢?小编猜测只有两个可能性:第一,价格重新调整,稍微回升,继续保持iFP-780机型;第二, iFP-780随后即刻停产,让剩余产品继续在市场低价流通,等T10、U10一系列产品推出中国市场后,重新弥补市场空挡。
从这两种可能性猜测看,iRiver都是损失相当之大的,不管是价格重整,还是等待新品,这个过程都会让iRiver重新建立销售渠道和树立品牌形象带来极大的阻力。
另外,我们还要看到iRiver此次价格波动为整个MP3业界所带来的冲击。iRiver所有MP3,都一直被业界和消费者认为是MP3中,代表着最高权 威,代表着最高质量,最高科技的品牌之一,然而此次价格的大幅度波动,也让众多国产品牌捏了一把汗。继续拿iFP-780来做例子,其使用的飞利浦 PNX0101芯片,在功能和音质等综合性能都比国产众多品牌的产品高出一截的水平,那么广州市场爆出599元的惊人价格,又将意味着一个什么样的市场概 念呢?
iRiver新品U10(中国未上市)
要知道海畅P650,国产第一款使用飞利浦PNX0101芯片的MP3,推出市场的价格128MB容量都要699元,而韩国原产的iFP-780使用同类 芯片,在工业设计、技术和功能还有整体综合性能上都比海畅P650要好,而价格才599元。这就很明显,国产品牌使用飞利浦芯片的所谓高、新科技产品,将 无地自容,甚至是血本无归。
不过国产品牌还是挺兴幸的,iRiver此番历史新低价格波动,不管iRiver官方,还是中国市场,都不允许他继续维持。那么是否国产品牌就能安枕无 忧?就能安于现状?会有厂商想象,如果真的有这么一天,如果真的有韩国产品卖的价格比国产产品还要低的那一天,而韩国产品的质量仍保持高于中国产品质量的 情况下,国产企业该如何生存?
这不是杞人忧天,也不是庸人自扰,我们回头看看国产手机业的发展。发生在曾经让国产厂商辉煌无限的手机制造领域。一个巨人倒下了,就因为区区2000万, 南方高科,这个所属广州市的国有高科技企业,在手机市场的严冬,终于倒下了。在其倒下之前,已经有了先烈,深圳的科建,南京的熊猫易美。一出出好戏接连上 演,这场风暴波及了整个中国手机产业,手机销量老大波导也不能幸免,连续几次调低盈利预期,直接出现亏损。
在手机业一个个血一样的教训,是否已经引起国产MP3厂商的高度重视?在现阶段,iFP-780 599元的价格,只是一场模拟情景,而最终无法长期执行。但是这么一场模拟场景,所带来的影响,相信已经让众多MP3企业深深体会到了,那么国产品牌应该 如何迎接MP3的严冬?如何迎接国外MP3品牌对中国市场的冲击呢?

Review Despite it's higher model number, the T30 actually sits between iRiver's T10 and T20 players (reviewed here and here). Like the T20, it's intended to be a compact fashion statement, but with space for a AAA battery, it's designed to offer a very long play duration, as per the T10.
Features-wise, the T30 is more akin to the T20. It's got voice and line-in recording, with the latter's microphone-jack socket placed right alongside the earphone socket - make sure you use the right one. Nearby is a bung-covered mini USB port and the obligatory necklace connector. The USB cover is attached to the player so you shouldn't lose it.
The T30 is roughly triangular in cross-section - the corners are well rounded - with the display the key feature of its face, next to the voice microphone. Above and below it, on two of said corners, are the controls. They're the same Menu, volume up and down, and Play/Stop and track skip controls as the T20 sports, but here they're sensibly rounded off and raised above the casing, making them far easier to use, particularly if you're reaching in to your jacket pocket to do so.
The rear corner slides off to reveal the AAA battery bay, alongside of which as the Hold slider, again textured to make it easy to use by touch. A single AAA alkaline battery won't give you as much play time as the T10's AA cell, but it's still enough for 20 hours' playback, says iRiver - six hours more than the T20's rechargeable power source can provide.
Like its two stable-mates, the T30 comes in 512MB and 1GB versions - I tested the latter - though here they're respectively "lawn green" and "rose red" in colour. Both, likewise, offer nine EQ pre-sets, a custom equaliser control and SRS sound enhancement. Again, enabling any of these will eat into the player's battery life thanks to the extra processing power they require. Their benefits are entirely subjective, so I left them off during testing.
The T30 provides the sound quality that its stable-mates do, and on that score I have no complaints. Like the other models, it'll pump out the volume for noisy environments. Just watch those ear-drums, OK? The player can handle MP3, Ogg, and DRM and non-DRM WMA files. Again, it communicates with a host PC using Microsoft's Media Transfer Protocol, so it doesn't appear to Windows XP as a USB mass-storage device. Unsurprisingly, Mac OS X couldn't see it at all.
The T30 isn't as attractive as the T10, but better looking than the T20. That's perhaps the key hurdle iRiver needs to leap: all other things being equal, its players don't look as good as Creative's and certainly not Apple's.
Verdict
Of the three iRiver Flash-based players I've been looking at over the past week or so, the T30 is my favourite. It's smaller yet more feature-filled than the T10, but not so small as to be a pain to use on my daily bus ride into work, which was certainly the case with the T20. It's also cheaper, since you're not paying for the smart USB connector on the latter model, or the T10's unnecessary colour display. ®

Create Podcasts Using Your PC

In my previous article, I wrote about receiving podcasts. This time around, I'm walking through the steps required to record and post your own podcast using tools virtually everyone has or can easily acquire on a tiny budget. Ultimately, if you decide to podcast on a regular basis, some equipment upgrades such as the podcast recording kit I recently detailed at JakeLudington.com will drastically improve the sound quality. To learn the process, though, you don't need anything fancy.
The other piece of hardware you need is a set of headphones. Headphones are important because although you need to monitor your recorded voice, you don't want the microphone to pick up sound coming from desktop speakers. Ideally, headphones that cover your ears do the best job of isolating your recording sound from other audio distractions. Earbuds make an affordable alternative.
I recommend starting out with Audacity, an open source audio recording application. I like it so much, I bought a T-shirt from the company to show my support. Audacity offers a solid complement of editing features with an interface simple enough for a novice. It outputs MP3-format audio for distributing your podcast once you download the Lame MP3 encoder. From here onward, I'll assume you have Audacity and Lame installed on your PC.
Before You Record
A few basic setup configurations are required in order to record a podcast. First, connect your microphone to the microphone-in connection on the PC. Connect headphones to the stereo line out or headphone jack (generally the green audio connection). Don't forget to put those headphones on. A laundry list of audio optimizations for your PC are recommended to keep your system running smoothly during recording.
After you launch Audacity, make sure Microphone is selected as the recording source in the drop-down menu on the mixer toolbar.

Open the Audacity Preferences window from the File menu. On the Audio I/O tab, verify that your sound card is selected as the device for both playback and recording. In the Channels drop-down box under Recording, choose 1 (Mono). Unless you are using two microphones, the Stereo option simply duplicates the track, making the file size bigger without a resulting improvement to audio fidelity.

Switch to the Quality tab, and choose 44,100 Hz as the Default Sample Rate and 16-bit as the Default Sample Format. Audiophiles will argue that higher sample rates and formats are better, but for spoken word, 44,100 Hz and 16-bit sampling works admirably, especially considering that the resulting output will be MP3. Ignore the rest of the settings on the Quality tab.

The File Formats tab configures output options. Choose WAV (Microsoft 16 bit PCM) as the Uncompressed Export Format. Leave the OGG Export Setup untouched. Then, find the location at which you extracted the Lame codec to add it to Audacity by clicking on the Find Library button and browsing to the file location. I generally unzip the Lame codec to C:\LAME so I can find it easily, but there's no "right" location. Once you've added Lame support, close the Audacity Preferences window by clicking on OK.

Ready to Record
Click on the microphone icon in Audacity's Meter toolbar to turn on monitoring. You should see a red level indicator moving slightly as it picks up ambient room noise. Talk into the microphone and make adjustments to the volume until you get a level that rises close to the right edge of the meter without turning the far-right section solid red. If you get a solid red bar at the far right, the audio is clipping, which means your finished file will sound distorted. Once you've adjusted the level, you're ready to record.

With all the preparations out of the way, it's time to create your first podcast. Push the Record button and start talking. When you finish recording, press the yellow square Stop button and save the file in .wav format. Saving is an important step, in order to make sure you don't accidentally delete the file.

It's time to edit the audio file or save it as an MP3 for distribution as your first podcast. Editing can be as simple as eliminating all the places you said "um" by highlighting them and deleting them, or as complex as adding a music bed and inserting other audio clips into the recorded file. To keep this simple, we'll assume you're a one-take wonder and you recited a golden monologue for your first podcast.
To save the file as an MP3, open the preferences again, choose the MP3 bit rate on the File Formats page. (Generally for voice audio, somewhere between 32 and 64 is good enough without making the file size too big.) The resulting audio file gets uploaded to a Web server, and you can link to it in your blog post.
Another important step is editing the ID3 tags for the file. You can easily accomplish this by opening the file in Windows Media Player, iTunes, or one of many other popular music players. In Windows Media Player, right-click on the file in the Now Playing list and choose Advanced Tag Editor. Fill in the Title and Artist fields at the very least, so the proper information about your podcast will display on iPods, Zen Micros, and other portable media players.
You need blogging software with support for enclosures to distribute the file via RSS, like Radio from UserLand, which is available for a $40 annual subscription. Movable Type is another alternative; it's free for personal use and has support for enclosures if you install a free plugin. Several other alternatives also exist. Enclosures are essentially a method to let news aggregation clients like FeedDemon, Newsgator, or Doppler know there's a file attachment associated with an RSS feed entry. Assuming you are using a blogging tool with support for enclosures, you simply type a blog post as you normally would, and use a standard HREF link to the MP3 you uploaded to your server. The blogging software determines that the link should be an enclosure in RSS based on the file type, and it makes an appropriate addition to the RSS feed.
If your blogging tool doesn't support enclosures (Blogger, for instance, currently doesn't), you can generate an free RSS feed with a FeedBurner account, which will support enclosures. FeedBurner offers a straightforward wizard to walk you through the process. Once you have the FeedBurner feed created, you promote the link to the FeedBurner feed and encourage people to subscribe.
In each of these cases, the publication process is fairly similar. Upload the MP3 to wherever you have Web space capable of storing files. Make a blog entry just like you normally would, with a title, link, and description. Link to the MP3 in the blog description and post your entry.
If you want to keep your podcast separate from regular blog postings, or if you don't currently have a blog, the simplest way I've found to publish a podcast is to sign up for the $5 account at Liberated Syndication and follow its podcast publishing wizard. The service automatically uploads your MP3 file, and creates the RSS feed and blog post associated with the podcast, all in one easy step. I use Movable Type for all my regular podcasting and blogging, but am amazed at the simplicity of using Liberated Syndication. I created a very basic site at the service to demonstrate the output.
